'top tips for hair colouring'..
- When having a hair colour in-salon for the first time, get a skin test 48hrs before "Better safe than sorry".
- Always seek advice from a qualified Hairdresser, most good salons will do a free consultation with no obligation.
- Remember some things are simply not possible, a hairdresser will give good advice on what can and can't be done.
- If you already have colour on your hair it may not be possible to lighten it without the use of a bleach.
- Use a special shampoo for coloured hair, this will keep the colour brighter for longer.
- Blonde hair can yellow quite quickly, use a shampoo such as TIGI Dumb Blonde to reduce yellow tones.
- You can reduce any damage caused by colour, by using a conditioner after every Shampoo.
- Try giving your hair a deep conditioning Masque once per week, this will keep it in Tip Top Condition.
'problems with dry hair'..
If there is one thing I hear more than anything else in the salon it is this, "My hair is in a terrible state, It's very dry". Imagine for one moment that you had a jumper that you washed every day for a year, how would it feel? probably not very good right!. A lot of people wash their hair every day, maybe with inferior quality products or with good one's used incorrectly.
Rule of thumb use a good quality shampoo and conditioner every time. One major myth is that the more conditioner you use the better the hair will feel. This is totally wrong as only the product that comes into contact with the hair will have an effect. All that the conditioner plastered 1 inch thick is doing, is costing you money. A good tip is to put a little conditioner on a section of hair, then smooth it along the hair shaft from roots to ends with your thumb and forefinger. This will make a major difference to how the hair feels, and you will actually feel the hair changing as you perform this ritual.
Also important is to follow the manufacturers instructions, if they say "Leave on for 5 minutes" then do that. You would be amazed how different the hair can feel when you take a little more time to use the product correctly.
My personal favourites at the moment are, Smoothing Conditioner from Biolage which is just amazing. I tend to think that my customers want an instant result rather than something that is going to take a few months to make a difference, and this will do that. Not for use on fine hair as it is far too heavy but if you have dry coarse hair then this is the answer to your prayers. If your hair is Blonde try KMS Blonde treatment, it is fantastic and if you really want to treat yourself try their leave-in Blonde creme.
For fine hair KMS Add-volume gel conditioner is great, leaves the hair shiny without being heavy at all.
top tips for oily hair'..
- Shampoo hair in tepid water, very hot water will probably make the condition increase.
- Don't give the scalp a "Real good rub" this is the worst thing to do as it will stimulate the sebaceous glands and produce even more oil.
- Shampoo the hair when you think you need to. There is absolutely no point in walking around with oily hair, as not shampooing will not decrease the oil produced.
- Try Biolage Normalizing shampoo to alleviate the problem.
- Once in a while use a clarifying shampoo to give the hair and scalp a really good deep cleanse. KMS do an excellent clarifying shampoo in their scalp therapy range
'split ends'..
That dreaded word "Split Ends", if I had a pound for every time a customer asked me that, I would be a very rich man. I remember there was a TV advert in the 70s that used to ask "Have you got Split Ends", about the same time everybody started asking their hairdressers did they have them. Basically once you start getting "Split Ends" the only way to get rid of them is to cut them off. This is a horrifying thought to most customers who are growing their hair, most people seem to think that if you just never cut your hair it will get longer. Sometimes the damaged caused by constant washing, heat from the drier and the straighteners, means that we end up having to cut more and you end up shorter than you started.
Regular trimming will help every 6 weeks, find yourself a hairdresser that you trust to cut off the smallest amount. If you using the straighteners you should use a heat protecter such as Biolage Fortifying Heat Styler or Tigi Catwalk Smooth&Seal. Always use a quality shampoo and conditioner, a great one for damaged hair is Bonacure Repair Rescue. And Finally give your hair regular treatments a great on is KMS overnight mask.
